How Korean addresses are written in English

Korean addresses go from the largest unit to the smallest. In English the order is reversed, and road and district names are romanized with the official system, as recommended by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. 서울특별시 종로구 사직로8길 60 becomes 60 Sajik-ro 8-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul. Roads end in -daero, -ro or -gil, and districts in -si, -gun, -gu, -eup, -myeon or -dong. Place names follow pronunciation, so 종로구 is Jongno-gu.

How to use it

Paste the Korean address as it is. You get a one-line English address plus separate fields for international order forms: Address line 1, Address line 2, City, State or Province, ZIP and Country, each with a Copy button. Put the apartment unit after a comma and it goes to Address line 2, in the unit format you pick. If you also need the recipient's name in English, use the Korean name romanizer.

When it may differ from the official spelling

The address is never looked up on a server. It is converted by rules inside the page, which keeps it private but means road names built from foreign words, such as Centum jungang-ro or Convensia-daero, can come out differently from the official English name. The page warns you when it sees such words. For passports, visas and other official documents, confirm on the government road address site (juso.go.kr). For parcels, couriers deliver by postal code and the Korean address, so the rule-based form works.

Order form tips

For State or Province, use the city name for Seoul, Busan and other metropolitan cities, or the province such as Gyeonggi-do. For City, use the district (-gu) if there is one, otherwise the city (-si). The postal code has five digits. Choose South Korea, Korea or Republic of Korea from the country list. Phone numbers take the country code without the leading zero, for example +82 10-1234-5678.
