Date order depends on the country

The US writes month, day, year: October 3, 2026 or 10/03/2026. The UK, most of Europe and Australia write day, month, year: 3 October 2026 or 03/10/2026. Korea, China, Japan and the ISO 8601 standard write year first: 2026-10-03. With numbers alone, 10/03 can mean October 3 or 10 March, which is how birth dates get swapped on airline bookings and visa forms. Writing the month in letters, as passports do (03 OCT 2026), removes the ambiguity.

How to use it

Pick a date to see it in US, UK, passport, numeric (MM/DD/YYYY and DD/MM/YYYY) and ISO formats, plus the weekday. Each row has a Copy button. To go the other way, type an English date or abbreviation such as OCT, 03 OCT 2026 or Sat into the decode box. An ambiguous numeric date like 10/03/2026 shows both the US and UK readings.

Abbreviation rules

Months are usually shortened to their first three letters. US style adds a period (Jan.), while UK style, tables and forms leave it out (Jan). May is not shortened, and June and July are often written in full in US prose. September appears as both Sep and Sept. Passports, airline tickets and boarding passes use three capital letters with no period (JAN, FEB, OCT). Weekdays are most often three letters (Mon, Tue); narrow calendar columns use two (Mo, Tu).

FAQ

Is the date sent anywhere?

No. The conversion runs inside this page. Dates, including birth dates, are never sent to a server or stored.

Is 10/03/2026 October 3 or March 10?

It depends on the country. The US reads month/day/year (October 3). The UK, Europe and Australia read day/month/year (10 March). To avoid confusion, write the month as letters, for example 03 OCT 2026.

Do month abbreviations take a period?

US style uses a period (Jan., Feb.). UK style and most tables leave it out (Jan, Feb). May, June and July are usually not shortened. Passports and airline tickets use three capital letters without a period (JAN).

Is September abbreviated Sep or Sept?

Both are used. Three-letter tables, forms and passports use SEP. US prose often uses Sept. Pick one and keep it consistent.
